MMA welcomes Patina Thomas as our new Business Representative. Patina began with MMA on April 27, 2022 and will be sharing duties with Melissa Scheid and Valerie Darling. Prior to joining MMA as an employee, Patina served on MMA’s Board of Directors.
Patina comes to MMA with more than 20 years of experience as a supervisor in both the public and private sectors. She was supported by MMA for nearly half of that time as a member, and as a result, directly understands the needs of MMA members. Her introduction to the valuable service unions provide began at Essex County Hospital Center of New Jersey where she served as Vice President of AFSCME. Patina comes to MMA from DHS where she was a Clinical Services Supervisor in the Behavioral Health Division; here she developed policy for programs and serviced communities impacted by behavioral health issues.
Patina holds a master’s degree from the College of Education at the University of Minnesota. Her gift for connecting with people in crisis led her to focus on therapies and she later earned licensure in professional counseling. Patina is recognized for her ethical and supportive leadership and is a respectful and attentive advocate for the needs of the individuals she serves. Foundational to Patina’s work is an understanding that supported employees are key to any effective organization.
Patina embodies a dutiful respect for compliance in all regulated situations and places a high value on integrity, transparency, loyalty, and justice. A steadfast advocate for equity in the work place, Patina has been integral in supporting organizations to root out racist practices in workplace culture. Patina is forever grateful to the people who supported her professional pursuits early on in her journey and is committed to supporting people in under resourced communities in their efforts to thrive.
