We have all been made aware of the recent decision to close the Stillwater Correctional Facility. Statements have been made that allude to “working” with labor partners in this decision as well as the planning of said closure. Yesterday, MMA was contacted by a member of the DOC senior leadership only after the announcement was made by the Governor to close the facility. Moments before the Governor’s press conference yesterday, Commissioner Schnell notified the MMA local leadership along with other local labor partners in leadership the facility was being closed. The MMA office, including our Executive Director, has yet to be contacted by either Commissioner Schnell or the Governor regarding this decision.
We have been given no more information than what has been released to the media, so it is inaccurate to say that we have been a part of this decision in any way. MMA is currently trying to gather more details, such as the expected timelines and impacts on our members at this facility. We will update membership as soon as we receive more information and will ensure the contractual rights are enforced throughout this process.
